Living in a tiny house is all about getting creative with storing your items and with efficient use of space. If you can make any item or any space multi-purpose, you’re doing it right! If you love going to the storage bin section of stores and organizing your items, this will be some of the most satisfying work in moving in to your tiny home.
When it comes to storage, you must first remember that a part of the tiny house process is simplifying – simplifying your life, and simplifying what you own. Declutter what you’ve collected over the years: If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in the last year, get rid of it. If you haven’t used that kitchen appliance in the last 6 months, get rid of it!
Once you’ve pared down your belongings, there are many ways you can maximize space.
First, think about storage vertically. You can try adding hooks to the undersides of all your shelves so you have storage both above and below. You can hang keys, dish towels, coats, and much more. Alternatively, in kitchen shelves you can fasten jar lids to the underside of shelves and attach jars holding kitchen staples like pasta, rice, or flour. Under-shelf baskets can be hooked to the shelf and hold items as well. Install rods over the sink or under cabinets and use S-hooks to hang scrub brushes, pots, pans, coffee mugs, and anything else you can think of!
Don’t forget about multi-purpose. Get a custom-fitted cutting board that fits over your kitchen sink or stovetop, to extend your working counter space. Under any seat is unused space! Build in space under your couch as shelving, drawers, or hideaway storage. You may want to look into modular furniture which can be rearranged or used as storage.
The options are endless, and the process of finding the perfect storage solutions can be a fun challenge.
