Towing your Tiny House on Wheels (THOW)

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Our builds at New Creation Tiny Homes are offered on trailers – these are called Tiny Homes on Wheels (THOW), and they are registered as RVs. To take them on the road you’ll need to have them registered, and with a visible license plate while the house is on the trailer. Check your state guidelines, but you’ll likely need to have your trailer inspected and tags renewed annually.

To make a move, consider hiring a towing service. They have the trucks and tools for the job, as well as the right insurance if something were to go wrong. This way, you don’t have to worry about weaving your oversized trailer through traffic or about the maximum capacity of any bridges you cross.

If you decide to do it yourself, there are some things to think about. You must know the weight of your tiny home and trailer with all of your belongings inside, and you must know the towing capacity of your vehicle. Check your vehicles make and model and it’s towing capacity, and be sure you’re calculating right! You want to be hundreds of pounds below the towing capacity in case you forgot to add in a heavy item (don’t forget yourself and other passengers!) or miscalculated.

When towing your house, plan routes with the least amount of turns possible. Look at potential parking spots or stops for gas on Google Maps ahead of time to avoid any dead ends or tight turn-around spots. Try to avoid rush hour traffic, and bring a friend in the passenger seat to help you spot hazards or cars in your blind spot.
